Van Gujjar

In Kunao Chaur, which falls in the core area of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, in Uttarakhand, the Van Gujjar community who reside there, along with members of the Van Gujjar Yuva Tribal Sangathan, were able to remove lantana from the nearby grassland. The removed lantana was used for creating boundary walls for the villagers and the grassland is used by their cattle for grazing. The carcass of dead animals are left in the grassland which has attracted the migratory Himalyan Griffon Vulture. According to the locals, the vulture used to earlier reside there before migrating onwards but had not been sighted for the past couple of years. The removal of lantana and the regeneration of the grasslands has allowed for the species to make this their temporary homes.
